The first time I met Geri I knew immediately that this would be a fun project. She is a classy, hip lady who was willing and eager to take some risks to incorporate hot new design trends into her home.

Design Trend #1: Bold Patterned Backsplash
Geri and I selected a bold concrete look porcelain tile as the “statement” piece of her kitchen and boy does it ever make a statement! I loved it when we selected it in the design showroom, but when it went on the wall it was even better and I thought my heart was going to burst with joy at how amazing it turned out.

Design Trend #2: Black and Brushed Brass finishes

BRASS??? What??

So many people cringe when they hear that brass is making a come back, but let me clarify; it is brushed or satin brass which is a whole different game. And yes, I love it! It is amazing how just a touch of brushed brass can add warmth to an otherwise cool palette. It brightens, warms, and adds unexpected interest.

Then enters Matte Black. While I love this finish, I love it even more when paired with Brushed Brass. The brass paired with it keeps it from feeling too masculine, in my opinion. I mixed the two at Geri’s house by mainly doing matte black lighting and plumbing and doing brass mirrors and hardware. I also incorporated some faucets with the mix of both finishes as well as a few lights that had just a touch of the brass to offset the black.

Design Trends #3 and 4: Pattern on pattern and picket shaped tile.

Picket shaped tile is hot right now and depending on how you orient it, it can take on a different vibe. Installed vertically, picket tile can feel more formal and traditional. Installed horizontally, picket tile is a bit more playful and casual. In this small bathroom remodel I layered different patterns to create a fun and interesting bathroom. I kept the color palette neutral to keep it from being too busy.
